Even though the inauguration of the new downtown Budapest thoroughfare was originally scheduled for May, renovation of the area between Szabadság Square and Kálvin Square may actually be finished by April.
The aim of the work is to introduce a new, unified image on Kecskeméti, Károlyi, Petőfi Sándor and Október 6 Streets. The asphalt pavement is being changed to stone paving, lighting has been modernized, trees have been planted, sculptures, fountains have been installed and the surface area reserved for pedestrians and cyclists has been increased. The second phase of the development is the reconstruction of Ferenciek Square, which will start this year and finish in 2011.
